Why Walk And Talk Counselling?

I can offer this customised solution for people who do not want to sit on a typical counselling couch. It can often take a couple of sessions in a standard counselling setting before clients feel at ease to be able to voice or explain clearly how they are feeling or what is bugging them.

Walking and talking is a natural activity. Most people can relate to enjoying going for a walk and chatting to a friend or family member and the conversation flowing freely.

Walk and Talk therapy is very popular for my male clients.

Often guys don't want to sit on a couch and share their personal feelings. It can be confronting opening up to a counsellor and feel scrutinised. I offer traditional counselling at my home office or online as some appointments require a more structured appointment.

I know from experience that there is no one size fits all

What prevents men from seeking counselling?

Stereotypical ideas prevail that men should be strong and resilient; they should bear the burden of providing for their loved ones and pull themselves together under pressure. But, of course, it is an impossible ideal to live up to. Still, sadly many men continue to suffer in silence, turning to anger, drugs, and alcohol, hurting themselves, or committing suicide.

Men often have a stigma about seeking counselling, and it is often the gentle nudge of another person - usually a concerned friend or partner - that finally leads them to do so. But unfortunately, men are often uncomfortable sitting in a chair to talk about their problems, and if they cannot relax, the experience is unlikely to be positive or helpful.

Why walk and talk counselling?

Counselling while walking and talking feels more like "doing" something. It is practical, active and connects the mind and body positively, rather than sitting passively and distracted by thoughts of what you else you should be doing at the time.

Also, moving from face-to-face to walking alongside removes some of the discomfort that many people (Not just men) feel when sitting across from someone and talking about personal or painful things.

Being Active Helps You Feel Good

A walk with me is more of a walk than just aimless strolling. We cover an average of four to five kilometres, so we are moving and getting some exercise. When we exercise, natural chemicals called endorphins are released into our brains, making us feel good. As a result, people report being more energetic, enthusiastic and confident after walking in the fresh air and experiencing less stress, depression and fatigue.

Finding the time for your health

Just making time for physical health is also essential to mental health. However, for people who work full time, have to care for someone at home or have other demanding commitments, finding time for themselves can be a low priority.
That's why I offer my walking counselling on Saturdays and evenings and weekday mornings after school.
If you or someone in your life could benefit from counselling or learn some coping strategies, book in for a 45-60 minute walk along the Bayside areas.
I can travel 15 Km from Cleveland so that we can walk in Wynnum, Manly, Lota, Wellington Point, Cleveland, Victoria Point and Redland Bay.
Are you still not sure if walking and talking along Brisbane's bayside areas is right for you?
